A Chief Digital Officer (CDO) can be the difference between grasping emerging opportunities and coming out stronger, and, struggling to survive. The role of the CDO itself is new and companies’ ability to maximize leverage from CDO is mixed. So, what are the 4 questions for which you must have answer before you set out to hire a CDO?

Economies and businesses across the world, across sectors, are facing huge distress due to Covid-
19 and from all appearances, this impact will likely last at least a few quarters. It is clear that firms
are in for tough times, a survival threat for many and a chance to re-arrange the industry league
tables for others – how can the CFO play a super-charged role in the period to come?

For firms to survive the next 12-24 months, and emerge stronger, they will have to be agile and
nimble to capture emerging opportunities, as well as ‘meanly lean’ to ride out the financial stress.
Digital technologies can enable both agility and reduced cost base. These technologies are already
‘out there’ but require a dedicated, full-time CDO to stitch a cohesive approach. And, NOW is the
time to on-board a CDO.

CFO Transitions is one of our core specializations. In 2017, we analysed trends in CFO Transitions by analysing 200 such transitions, focusing on the individuals who made the transition. For this 2020 edition, we have changed the focus to firms and expanded our search to include all private companies in BS1000, totalling to 850+ companies in this study. It is our pleasure to share the insights on the changing trends.
